Phonics: A Must-have for Schools in India

All across the world, the education system is changing rapidly. In India, however, the situation is different. The education system of India is lagging behind. Reports show that 80% of Indian school students from age 5-15 can’t read and write properly.

To gain understanding of any information, a person has to be able to read. Difficulty with reading results in a difficulty in comprehending and understanding. This again is a path to the masses of India not having sufficient knowledge and the whole country lagging behind. This has to be changed for the development of our country. An effective solution has to be found to keep India on par with the other developed countries.

One solution we can come up with is teaching phonics in the schools of India.

So, what is Phonics?

Phonics is a branch of linguistics which studies the relationship between sounds and spellings corresponding to those sounds. It helps children to read and write. As more and more students fail to read and write properly, phonics has become an integral part in the education system in most schools all across the world. Phonics teaches children sound-spelling relationships so that they decode or understand words better. Comparing the written language to code, the knowledge of phonics helps students comprehend words better.

All words are comprised of small units of sound which are called as phonemes. Phonics helps children in listening to these sounds and identifying them. It also helps children know which alphabets to use while writing.

Why is it important to teach phonics?

As language learning ability and the various sounds of human speech as naturally mastered by every individual, there is a question often asked by parents and educational institutions on whether phonics learning is important for children. The answer, however, has always remained the same. YES, it is indeed very important for children to be taught phonics as a part of their curriculum as it helps them in ways more than just being able to identify sounds and write spellings correctly.

Children who are taught phonics in schools have better reading skills, fluency, efficiency, accuracy and comprehension. They will also be able to pronounce words correctly and have an extensive vocabulary. Teaching phonics to children helps them in developing confidence too!
