Phonics for India!

India ranks first in countries which have the highest youth population which is about 356 million amongst which 31 million are unemployed and currently seeking jobs. The number of unemployed Indians is steadily increasing each year.

Even with the highest youth population, India is still a developing country and not a developed country. Reports say that 53% of college graduates are not equipped with skills needed for employment. Another report says that 80% of Indian school students from age 5-15 can’t read and write properly.

Yet another report says that 3 million jobs were created in India in the first six months of 2018. There is an increase in unemployed youth even though many jobs are being created.

Why is this so? Why are the youth of India remaining unemployed even with abundance of jobs being created?

The reason is that the employability skills are being reduced year by year. The graduates passing out each year neither possess the skill-set required by the organizations in which they are seeking employment nor the lingual ability to converse with others in English.

Education is the most important foundation for any country to grow and develop. There are many solutions for the increase in employability and skills of an individual which ultimately plays a major role in the growth of our country. One of the solutions is phonics.

Phonics is a branch of linguistics which studies the sound-spelling relationship. All across the world, most schools are integrating phonics as a part of curriculum in the early years of education. This results in children being able to comprehend the sounds made by the letters and read words. This further impacts the child’s ability to spell words.

It is proven that children who have studied phonics as a part of their curriculum have shown better comprehension and understanding. It develops the efficiency and reading skills too!

With globalization occurring at a rapid pace and English being the lingua-franca of the world, Indian schools must not only assimilate but also prioritize phonics as an important part of their curriculum to ensure that our students also have more opportunities and more growth. Inclusion of phonics in the curriculum paves way to children having a more extensive vocabulary, having more confidence and being more vocal too!
